UK Government Ban on Guitars in Prison Successfully Overthrown by Billy Bragg

In April of this year, the UK government implemented a ban on steel string guitars in all UK prisons. This ban coincided with a rise in suicide rate among prisoners. Although no official correlations have been drawn, you need to wonder if the ban could have been part of the reason for increase in self-inflicted mortality. This morning it was announced that Billy Bragg’s campaign to reverse the ban was successful and inmates will once again have individual access to guitars provided they show good behavior. Undoubtedly, this is a win for humanity. Of course, allowing some prisoners access to a steel string guitar might be dangerous. With proper supervision, however, we know that the power of music can help rehabilitate these prisoners. Billy Bragg has been at the forefront of the Jail Guitar Doors initiative since 2007, which aims to bring guitars into the hands of prisoners for the sake of rehabilitation. uk-government-ban-guitar-prison-billy-bragg-2 Once the ban was announced, Bill, together with colleagues, politicians and other musicians, began campaigning against the ban and today the government has listened. This is a great victory and you should all be very proud. Thanks to your efforts, music will touch the lives of many people who desperately need it. Congratulations!
